Victim of Identity Theft
If you are a victim of identity theft and wish to file a complaint,
or to protect yourself:
- Visit the Federal Trade Commission’s Web site at www.ftc.gov.
(You must be connected to the Internet to be able to view this link.)
Click on For Consumers Button and click on Identity Thief.
- Contact the FTC at 1-877-438-4338.
- Contact the FTC by mail at Identity Theft Clearinghouse, Federal
Trade Commission, 600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20580.
- Contact the police.
- Call the fraud departments at each of the three credit bureaus.
- Equifax: (800) 525-6285
- Experian: (888) EXPERIAN (397-3742)
- TransUnion: (800) 680-7289
- Contact the security department of any credit card company that an
ID thief has gained access to.
- Call your bank if your wallet or purse is stolen or lost.
- Cancel checking and savings accounts and open new ones.
- Stop payments on outstanding checks.
- Get a new ATM card, account number and PIN or password.
- Notify the Social Security Fraud Hot Line: (800) 269-0271 if your
social security number has been lost or stolen.
